Hiring a Junior Marketer isn’t as easy as it looks.

By Simon on

On paper, it sounds simple: hire a junior, get fresh ideas & energy, and shape them into the marketer you need. In reality, you’ll get over 150 applications and a lot of frustration on both sides, as it’s rarely that straightforward. Here are a few ways to avoid drowning in CVs & breaking hearts along the way.

1. Write job ads that actually make sense.
If the role is truly junior, drop the “1–2 years’ experience” requirement. Focus instead on potential, mindset, and the willingness to learn. Be specific about what the day-to-day work looks like. Vague ads attract wild applications.

2. Offer training and a clear growth path.
Juniors want to learn and see where they’re heading. Call out mentorship, structured onboarding, or certifications (HubSpot, Google Analytics, etc.). Show how the role can grow into Marketing Executive or Specialist within 12–18 months. That’s how you make the role feel like a career move, not just any job.

3. Get real about pay and perks.
If you’re asking for digital skills, don’t pay intern-level wages. And if budgets are tight, highlight other perks such as hybrid work, flexible hours, wellness benefits, or training budgets. These matter.

4. Widen your lens.
Great marketers don’t only come from marketing degrees. Communications, psychology, data, law, even career changers can all bring fresh perspectives.

5. Sell your culture.
Juniors want to belong. Don’t just say you’ll assist the marketing manager with tasks. Talk about the projects they’ll get involved in, the team they’ll learn from, and the environment they’ll join.

6. Manage expectations on both sides.
If some tasks are admin-heavy, be upfront. Train managers to coach, not just delegate. Nothing kills enthusiasm faster than feeling like a box-ticking assistant with no development.

I’ve learnt the hard way: make the role feel like a launchpad, not a dead end. Juniors want growth, real skills, and to feel valued. Position the job that way, and you’ll fill it far more easily & with someone who’ll actually stick around.
