The Ultimate Guide to Job Hunting in a Recession

By Emma Tee on

Take this as a fair warning, as we’re about to delve into a topic that people don’t want to talk about… job hunting in a recession. And, if we’re honest, we don’t want to talk about it either!

In hindsight, that’s probably not the most enticing start to a blog post.

So, let’s get into it. Let’s get into the topic of the recession we’re currently wading through and have been since the end of 2023. Knocking around for over 30 years means that we’ve experienced our fair share of recessions, so whilst we’re not Jeremy Hunt (thankfully), we do know how it impacts people and the job market. Even though EVERYONE knew we were in a recession long before it was announced when the news comes through official channels the job market becomes drier than the Sahara desert in an August heatwave, which then results in the second dreaded ‘R’ word, redundancy.

This is the position we find ourselves in now.

Finding a job is tough enough, but throwing in scarce job opportunities and plenty of fierce competition, means that job hunting in a recession can feel a little unnerving, to say the least. But it’s not all doom and gloom, as long as you’re ready for the job hunt and raring to be proactive, you’ll find a job during a recession.

Target What You Want

When looking for a new job, we understand that it can be tempting to endlessly scroll LinkedIn or Indeed and quickly apply to every single job you see, but we can guarantee that’s not how you’re going to succeed. Instead, get the kettle on or crack a bottle of beer (whichever works best, we don’t judge!) and really think about where your skills and experience lie and what you’d like to make a move for. Is it a sideways step? Is it an upward move? Are you looking for a career change? Are you open to opportunities in a related field? Think about it, get it written down, and be laser-focused on going after that.

Use A Multifaceted Approach

Don’t pour all of your time and effort into a single job search stream. Use everything available to you as there are so many ways to find a job outside of the traditional job boards. As a recession hits, companies change their approach to recruitment. Some will advertise directly on their own websites and social media pages, and others use recruitment agencies as their manpower has had to be stripped back or energies have had to be put elsewhere, which means they don’t have the time to sift through hundreds of CVs. With that in mind, keep your search broad and cover all bases.

Stay In The Loop

As the economy twists and turns, you should keep your finger on the pulse to enhance your search. Tune in to what’s happening in the general job market and, more specifically, your industry by connecting with people in your sphere and keeping an eye on the news. In doing this, your understanding of the job landscape will help you tailor your job search strategy. It’s also worth investing in your professional development and keeping up to date with new trends and technologies that are sought after as staying current will make you a more attractive prospect to potential employers.

Tap Into Your Network

It’s not something that people do all too often, so it’s no surprise that job searching can be a daunting task. There’s a hidden job market out there so reach out to former colleagues and industry contacts and expand your professional network by attending networking and industry events. It’s also important to seek support from family and friends; surround yourself with a network that offers support, encouragement and guidance. Networking is invaluable during a recession!

Keep A Smile On Your Face

Easier said than done, we know, but remember that every ‘no’ brings you one step closer to a ‘yes’. It’s all about perspective, so whilst rejection is inevitable and disheartening, embrace the journey and trust that the right opportunity is out there waiting for you. It’s something to learn from as each rejection is a chance to grow and improve. Your resilience and determination will set you apart and lead you to success. Keep pushing forward, stay positive, and believe in yourself.

Job hunting in a recession has its fair share of challenges, but it’s not impossible. There are still many companies out there that are killing it and looking to recruit, so keep our tips in mind and start your search!
