Why hiring before you’re desperate is smarter hiring.

By Simon on

Especially in the creative world.

As specialist recruiters in the creative space, we get it: agencies can’t always predict when pressure will skyrocket, often before they’ve even had a chance to think about hiring! A big pitch lands. Someone’s just quit. The studio’s running on fumes and four hours’ sleep. Cue the scramble: “We need someone, yesterday!”

It’s totally understandable. When client demands are breathing down your neck, hiring often feels like a luxury and that you’ll “get to it when there’s time.” But, here’s the thing: that’s rarely when the best hiring decisions are made.

Here’s why it pays to hire before you hit panic mode.

  1. You can afford to be choosy

When you’re not in a rush, you get to focus on hiring for the long-term fit, not just plugging a gap. Culture, potential, personality, and working style are easier to assess when you’re calm and not firefighting.

  1. Top talent isn’t always available when you are

The best creatives? They get snapped up quickly! If someone exceptional appears on your radar while things are quiet, grab them with both hands. Waiting for the “perfect time” often means missing the perfect person.

  1. You reduce the risk of a bad hire

Hiring under pressure often leads to shortlisting based on speed rather than suitability. One rushed hire can cost more in morale, money, and time than taking a moment to do it right.

  1. You build a stronger, future-ready team

Proactive hiring isn’t about inflating headcount, it’s about building range. Having the right mix of thinkers, doers, planners, and creative chaos-bringers gives you the agility to scale and flex when opportunity knocks.

  1. You stay ahead of the curve

The agencies landing the big, exciting work? They’re usually the ones with a bench of people, ready and raring to go, and not the ones starting interviews three weeks after the pitch lands.

  1. Creative people don’t thrive in chaos (no matter what they say)

Yes, creatives can and do roll with the punches, but great ideas often need headspace, clarity, and an onboarding experience that’s more than a message over Slack and a quick 15-minute chat over Teams. Hiring early means that creatives hit their stride earlier and make a better impact.

  1. You protect your current team from burnout

Overstretching your team while you “wait and see” is one of the fastest ways to lose them. Hiring when things are steady spreads the load and shows your team that support is on the way before they even have to ask for it!

In short, calm hiring is smart hiring.

We know the industry doesn’t always run on logic. Sometimes, things do fall apart at 5:27pm on a Friday, but when you can think ahead, do. Because hiring when you’re not desperate leads to better decisions, stronger teams, less stress, and fewer interviews that feel like speed-sating at the end of the world.
